Honoring Native American Heritage Month: bridging gaps in research and representation

As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month this November, we take time to recognize the vast diversity, rich heritage, and cultural contributions of Native American communities throughout American history. It’s also crucial to reflect on the historical and ongoing challenges faced by Native communities, particularly in the realms of science and healthcare. Marginalized communities, including that of Native Americans, have often been underrepresented in clinical research and scientific studies. This exclusion perpetuates systemic biases within our healthcare systems, ultimately leading to inequitable access to the benefits of medical advancements. It is important to acknowledge these disparities and work towards a more inclusive approach that respects the unique cultural and health needs of all populations.

At JCVI we believe that these imbalances can be remedied through innovative research programs that prioritize collaboration with Native communities. Our goal is to develop initiatives aimed at co-designing research that directly involves Native/Indigenous voices, ensuring that the outcomes reflect their unique perspectives and priorities. The focus is to empower these communities, ensuring they are not just subjects of studies, but active participants in the knowledge generation process along with benefit sharing.

Ultimately, the goal of these programs is to guarantee that Native American communities have total control of their genomic data, enabling them to retain ownership of their cultural and biological heritage. As we honor Native American Heritage Month, it is a vital opportunity to advocate for greater representation and inclusivity in research. By prioritizing collaboration and respect, we can help dismantle the barriers that have historically marginalized these communities, paving the way for a future where all populations can equitably share in advancements in science and medicine.
